Rogue's Gallery

Rogue's Gallery began during the making of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, when director Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp started talking about a record built from the real songs of sailors and the sea. Verbinski brought the idea to his longtime friend Brett Gurewitz, and once the project reached ANTI-, Hal Willner was brought in to produce.

Willner had already built a singular career around bringing unlikely artists and repertoires together, from his albums devoted to Nino Rota, Thelonious Monk, Kurt Weill and Charles Mingus to the Disney collection Stay Awake and the anything-can-happen musical world of Night Music. He was also a familiar presence around ANTI- through his relationships with artists including Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Beth Orton and Marianne Faithfull. Rogue's Gallery gave him an enormous new subject to disappear into.

Willner began knowing almost nothing about sea chanteys and spent months collecting hundreds of old songs and recordings. He eventually narrowed the possibilities to 75, then set up loose sessions in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, London and Dublin, assembling house bands and inviting whoever happened to be around to join in. Richard Thompson, Nick Cave, Sting, Bono, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams, Bryan Ferry, Rufus Wainwright, Jolie Holland, Bill Frisell, Baby Gramps and many others all entered the picture. Sixty songs were recorded for the first project, with 43 making the two-disc Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys in 2006. The Guardian called it "a 43-track epic that actually works," while The New York Times described it as "a strong album with heart as well as ideas."

The story continued in 2013 with Son of Rogue's Gallery, combining material left from the original sessions with years of additional recording. Tom Waits and Keith Richards sing "Shenandoah"; Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Dr. John, Beth Orton, Michael Stipe, Courtney Love, Marianne Faithfull, Shane MacGowan and Johnny Depp are among the sprawling cast. Uncut praised "the energy and eccentricity of the contemporary and traditional songs alike."

Across the two collections, bawdy work songs, murder ballads, laments and centuries-old melodies become a giant Hal Willner production in the best sense: scholarly, chaotic, funny, beautiful and full of collisions nobody else would have thought to arrange.

Start with Richard Thompson's "Mingulay Boat Song," Nick Cave's "Fire Down Below" and Tom Waits and Keith Richards on "Shenandoah."
